About Vertical/Upright Standers

A Vertical Stander is always in a full upright position. This type of stander may require less space, cost less, and offer fewer support pieces than other varieties. Also known as Upright Standers, they provide support to the front of a child's body in a similar manner as a prone stander, however they do not lean forward.

Typically, a vertical special needs stander is appropriate for a very small child that can easily be assisted into, and positioned in a stander. Larger children often transfer into the stander from a seated position where their feet are secured in foot cups, knees are blocked on pads, and their rear end is secured once standing. A saddle or pommel is often found on a vertical stander and a tray can be attached to the front for activities, or the stander can be moved close to a table or counter for group participation or help in the kitchen or classroom.

Consider:

• A caregiver is required for assisting with positioning or fully positioning the child depending on their ability to help

• Positioning any necessary supports (typically less than supine standers)

• A child may be able to help with transferring or positioning

• Needs to be able to control thier head and some to all of their trunk

• Benefits from full weight-bearing

• Can be positioned at the same height as their peers
